Most obstetricians would dismiss the idea that stress alone could cause a miscarriage, attributing it to fetal abnormalities or health problems in the mother. But a study on mice by a team at the University of Berlin has shown that it can. This doesn’t prove it could happen in humans, but mothers-to-be might want to take care. “If you feel stressed, seek support from a friend, doctor or midwife,” says Ruth Bender Atik of the UK Miscarriage Association, “particularly if you had difficulty conceiving or have miscarried before.” Live long and prosper. Live, love and laugh.
